Coastline - Beaches
Most locals will tell you that they spent their childhood on the beach and have great memories of building sandcastles, exploring rock pools and swimming in the sea. This is still very much the case and in the summer you will see children enjoying the same activities.
The island has twenty-seven fine beaches to suit all tastes. If it is windy, you will be able to find one that is sheltered and many of the most popular have toilet facilities and a kiosk. Kiosks vary in size but at most you can usually buy things that you may need such as drinks, snacks, sun cream and, of course, a cream tea.
West coast beaches tend to be wide, flat and sandy, as are north coast beaches. The south coast bays are a mix of pebbles and sand. As the south coast of Guernsey is cliffs, some beaches are harder to get to. Some have easier access although for some bays you will need to follow cliff paths and steps. However, your efforts will be rewarded, as these bays tend to be quieter and the scenery is stunning.
Bathing water is tested weekly from April to September at thirteen locations around the Island’s coastline. Bathing water quality results are displayed on information boards at the most popular recreational beaches: Fermain, Petit Bot, Portelet, L'Eree, Vazon, Cobo, Grandes Rocques, Port Soif and Pembroke/L'Ancresse. These are updated on a weekly basis throughout the summer.
