Sea Guernsey

Heritage - Sea Rescue

Between 1803, when the island had its first pulling lifeboat, and 1861, when the RNLI took over the Guernsey station, 125 wrecks were recorded in local waters. From 1862 to 1928 a further 135 occurred, with the lifeboat being called out just 17 times. However, this brave yet ineffective service eventually grew to become the envy of the world. Records show Guernsey Lifeboats launching nearly 1000 times saving almost 600 lives.

Guernsey is proud of the coxswains and crew who have accumulated RNLI gallantry awards with no less than 2 Gold Medals, 8 Silver Medals and 15 Bronze Medals awarded since 1861.
