ISLAND HOPPING

It was rising sea levels and the sheer power of the Atlantic Ocean that conspired to carve Guernsey and her islands of Alderney, Sark and Herm out of the neighbouring Cotentin peninsula, around 7,000 BC.

Whilst she was etching out four distinctive coastlines, Mother Nature also laid the foundations for a clutch of similar but fiercely individual island characters. That same pounding surf is still the heartbeat of the islands - and their people - to this day.

Exiled French poet Victor Hugo described his fellow islanders as his 'Noble little people of the sea'. Even 135 years after his departure, it's not hard to see why. The ocean unites and separates the people of Guernsey, Herm, Sark and Alderney and, in doing so, provides the ultimate island-hopping opportunity. Together, the four islands provide the perfect playground for divers, anglers, marine artists and historians, surfers, sailors and pleasure-boaters of every description.

From spring through to autumn, bustling ferries work the short passages between Guernsey, Sark and Herm, whilst Alderney enjoys year-round air links.
